Original Music Composition and Sound Design for Live Theatre

Whether by the creation of pre-recorded cues, or through original vocal/choral/instrumental arrangements for a cast to perform live, Allison strives to develop a score that is energetic and moving. As a working actor, Allison values a soundscape that is based in deep exploration of the text, ensuring the aural experience is supportive of character motive and development for listeners both onstage and in the audience. With attention to detail in the use of sound effects, speaker placement, directional sound and levels, Allison undertakes to integrate her design seamlessly with all production design elements, while effectively navigating the core drive and emotion of the narrative.

Musical and Vocal Direction

Allison leads actor-singers and actor-musicians in learning and performing vocal and instrumental arrangements live onstage, audio/voiceover captures, as well as in studio recording scenarios. By creating music for an actor’s specific skill set, or adapting existing music to the skill-level of each performer, Allison creates an environment of openness and inclusion so that all performers feel supported and utilized to the best of their abilities. Allison is also a certified member of Skipping Stone's Trans Affirming Network of individuals and businesses committed to LGBTQ+ inclusion.

As a multi-instrumentalist, Allison has the ability to utilize a combination of live and software instruments in her studio recorded scores. For live instrumentation, Allison may draw upon her skills on fiddle, guitar, ukulele, Bodhrán, drum-set, tin whistle and flute. She also maintains an extensive software instrument library in order to access a wide range of musical genres in her composing. From lush classical orchestrations to traditional East coast fiddling, electronic, jazz and everything in between, Allison has the ability to explore a wide range of audio textures in each uniquely devised soundscape.

Allison Lynch's work on my 1950s tale of loss and love helped everyone hold the heart of the telling firmly in our hands. The sounds she crafted were rich and layered, yet they were never impressive for the sake of impressing. She simply is impressive because of her ability to weave with all collaborators on deck, moving seamlessly from comedic beats to longing and all things in between.

Playwright/Director, The Ministry of Grace (The Belfry, 2020) Siminovitch Prizewinner, 2020, Former Artistic Director, Native Earth

Glynis Leyshon

Working with Allison Lynch on the soundscape for Rosencrantz and Guilderstern was truly a creative dream. Intelligent, passionate, deeply imaginative - Allison not only composed a thrilling soundscape for the production, but worked with the acting ensemble to create a musical ensemble capable of both challenging harmonics and engaging instrumental passages. The Player King's Theme was hypnotic - an ode to the vagabond existence of itinerant players - and was so powerful that it became the emotive link in the play's picaresque story. As an actor herself, Allison brings not only outstanding musicality to sound design but a kind of narrative intelligence that not only delights the ear but inventively continues to advance the narrative thread.

Director, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, (ATP, 2019)

Stafford Arima

When I moved to Calgary in 2017, one of the first artists I met was Allison Lynch. Her skill as a composer, performer, arranger, orchestrator, and sound designer blew me away. Having collaborated with her in all of those areas, Allison Lynch is truly a creator who believes in expanding her creativity and artistry in such awesome and magnificent ways.

Director, The Secret Garden, (Theatre Calgary 2018), A Christmas Carol (Theatre Calgary, 2019-2021, 2023), Artistic Director, Theatre Calgary

Denise Clarke

A highly skilled musician/actor, Allison Lynch composes with all of herself. Her sound designs are built with musicality, theatricality and an understanding of how a soundtrack can compel the narrative, underline the emotion or provide smart and witty accompaniment.

Artistic Director, One Yellow Rabbit, Director, A Tender Thing (Lunchbox Theatre, 2020), Director, Songs from Nightingale Alley, (One Yellow Rabbit, 2017/2023)

Vanessa Porteous

Allison Lynch created a timeless, haunting sound scape for our stripped down, very human, homespun, yet poetic production of The Penelopiad. Her work featured dense, lush intersecting choral harmonies that put the central image of the piece into music: those secret nights Penelope and the maids spent together, around the loom, weaving and unweaving. Allison’s music was performed entirely live from the stage by the ensemble of performers, and she wrote to suit their range of musical and vocal skills. Allison’s design became emblematic of the themes of the show. All the complexities, sorrows, and comforts of female solidarity came through so very emotionally in the music. I’d work with Allison in a heartbeat. On anything.

Director The Penelopiad (ATP), and The Penelopiad (The Arts Club), former Artistic Director, Alberta Theatre Projects

Micheline Chevrier

Allison's inspired score for The Scarlet Letter is informed by her incredible gifts as a musician and performer. Not only does her work perfectly reflect Nagy's haunting and disturbing world, but it also adds to the mystery of both the characters and the story. Haunting in a sublime way.

Artistic Director, Imago Theatre, Director, The Scarlet Letter (Theatre Calgary)

Janelle Cooper

I asked Allison to join the creative team as Musical Director for our production of The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God. I asked her because of her extraordinary incomparable talent, yes. That goes without saying. But I think Allison's greatest superpower is her ability to connect. To tap into that special something that someone has. Everyone who works with Allison walks away better than they arrived, because of the generosity and love with which she leads. You are seen. As you are. And you are celebrated.
